Spirits by Ivan Turgenev is a wondrous short story by the great Russian writer. The protagonist encounters a ghost or spirit who takes him on fabulous rides through the air across Europe and asks if he loves her. Unfortunately for the protagonist loving her is quite a problem.

Oh, I love this story! It´s odd, but evocative and beautiful... I needed Victorian, English name for my heroine in my own story so I called her Alice after reading this.
