The Truth about Succubi - by Thaddeus Romans

“Succubi are sly creatures who survive by draining the biological essence from men. They seduce their victims by fulfilling their innermost sexual fantasies.”
In The Vampires among Us by Thaddeus Romans
The notion of succubi walking among us, holding jobs, and being members of society is completely ludicrous. There are demons of the night that seduce men and drain their energy from them. No one can be sure about the appearance of succubi because they can make themselves look like anything they want. They prey on men that are overpowered by their sexual longings. Succubi can sniff them out in a manner that is not fully understood. A few men make unholy pacts and find the woman of their dreams is their nightmare of their life. Succubi do not usually kill the men they seduce, but leave them in a weakened condition. While most men will recover their strength over a period of many months, some spend their life in a permanently weakened condition. However, anger a succubus and you have signed your death warrant. In Neil Benson's vampire novel, Unholy Embrace, Nessa, the vampiress spots a succubus at a party. Vampires have the ability to see and even feel the presence of demons. The succubus in this novel flees from the more powerful creature.

Unholy Embrace a vampire novel - Thaddeus Romans on the myth of vampires

“Vampires remain a myth because of the poor quality of documentation of their existence. The lack of credible investigations, starting in the Middle Ages and continuing until the present time, has provided vampires with a cloak of invisibility that still exists.”
In The Vampires among Us by Thaddeus Romans
In my research for The Vampires Among Us, I read numerous copies of actual reports of investigations of reported vampire beginning in the 1500s. As the vampiress, Nessa, said in Neil Benson's novel, Unholy Embrace, "It is not possible to examine a vampire after their existence is ended because they rapidly decline into dust." The eroticization of the vampire occurred because when bodies were exhumed shortly after death, men had erections. This is a normal process that wasn't understood during those times. The quality of these reports were poor not just because of insufficient scientific knowledge, but because they were frequently conducted in a climate of hysteria. Someone would claim they saw the dead man walking in at night, and others would verify that false observation. The civil servant called in to make the investigation was under pressure to write a report that mollified the concerned citizens.
Even today, with electron microscopes, nothing can be learned about the biological existence of the vampire. If a slice of skin were taken from a vampire, the microscope would show dead tissues. This would be useful only if a vampire allowing a movie to be taken of the entire process. It is inconceivable that any vampire would consent to this. Only when a vampire is captured "alive" and studied on film will more conclusive evidence be available. Until then the vampire resides between the greatness of belief and disbelief.

Unholy Embrace a vampire novel - Vampires enter society

As European cities grew larger in the 18th century, it became easier for vampires to live among mortals. For the most part, vampires lived on the fringes of society. Even when they lived in cities, most vampires lived solitary lives. Some vampires were drawn to the flourishing culture that developed in European cities by the middle of the 19th-century.”

In The Vampires among Us by Thaddeus Romans

Despite the extremely pale complexion of vampires they ran little risk of recognition. Most people never thought about vampires, or didn't believe in them. They were able to conduct business and engage in business transactions at night. Maintaining secrecy for survival meant that most vampires were frugal by nature. Over long periods of time, many of them were able to accumulate substantial amounts of money. They became shadow partners to businessmen who couldn't obtain loans through ordinary sources. Some vampires became patrons of the arts. The symphonies and arts in many European capitals benefited significantly by donations from vampires.

In the 20th century as cities grew massive vampires could mingle in select segments of society. However, by now there was a greater awareness of what the vampire looked like, which forced them to expose as little skin as possible. The face could be made darker with the use of makeup. In the vampire novel, Unholy Embrace, by Neil Benson, Nessa, the vampiress had extensive involvement with French impressionist artists.

Unholy Embrace a vampire novel - vampires and the development of blood banks.

“During the latter part of the middle Ages, mortals became more sophisticated in their ability to hunt down and kill vampires. Vampires needed to kill deer and even cattle to supplement their diets.”
In The Vampires among Us by Thaddeus Romans

Vampires can survive by taking blood from cattle and other animals. However, these are poor substitutes for human blood, and vampires are not at their full strength when surviving only on animal blood. The development of blood transfusion technology meant the vampire no longer had to kill to obtain blood. In 1818, Dr. James Blundell a British obstetrician performed the first successful blood transfusion of human blood, for the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage. In the 1910s, it was discovered that by adding anticoagulant and refrigerating the blood it was possible to store it for some days, thus opening the way for blood banks. Naturally, vampires were very interested in obtaining access to blood banks. Groups of them use the money they had accumulated over the centuries and created their own blood banks. Most of the blood from such banks was utilized by mortals, but the vampires made sure their own needs were met first. In Unholy Embrace, Nessa, the female vampire, becomes a partner in an early, experimental blood bank.
