Wizard under Fire - an ear shattering confrontation

Wizard under Fire - excerpt

Ramón reached into his backpack, handed me a flash bang grenade, and moved to the side of a window. With two grenades in one and hand and his Glock in the other, he whispered, "One one-thousand, two one-thousand, three one-thousand." A shot from his gun shattered the center of the window and he tossed his two grenades inside. I lobbed mine through the hole he had created, knelt down, and covered my ears.

The three explosions, louder than shotgun blasts, would deafen anyone inside. The blinding light cause visual disorientation. The brick wall shielded us from most of the effects of the grenades.

Ramón kicked in the front door, and I followed him inside. Two men lay on the floor, covering their ears. A third man rose from behind a metal desk, closed his eyes, and began chanting. A loud ringing echoed in my head. I felt dizzy, and the room spun.

Gritting my teeth, I thrust my right palm at the man in front of me. Nothing happened. I hadn't generated a blast of air and my dizziness increased as he continued chanting. I took a deep breath, steadied my right arm with my left, and pointed my hand at him. This time the force of wind generated by my magic threw him backwards into the rear brick wall, and he fell to the ground. I grabbed my Glock, ready to shoot if he moved, but he lay motionless, face down on the floor. My magic had never failed me before. I use a gun mainly in self-defense, but if this bastard moved, I would shoot him.

My Red-haired Lover A - dark poem of vampire love by Neil Benson

My Red-haired Lover

Bright red hair caught my eye.
A sly, fey smile drew me in.  Musky fragrance made me reel.
My mind was not my own.
She took my hand in hers,
and led me to her car.
As we drove into the night,
her fingers played with my thigh.
She led me into her home,
and pulled my face to hers.
Cool lips pressed against mine.
Her tongue caressed my mouth.
Hot passion burnt my soul.
She took me to the bedroom.
As her dress fell to the floor,
she pulled me to her breasts.
Soon my clothes were gone.
She stroked me with her hand,
then took me in her mouth.
My body became red hot.
To bed she pulled me down,
and eased me into her.
As ecstasy drove me mad,
her fangs entered my neck.
I cried out in pain and joy.
She whispered you are mine.
I said I was her slave.
Her lover for all time.

The Other Side by Eric Starbock - free werewolf story

"I'm a two hundred fifty year-old vampire" excerpt from Dark Journeys anthology

Excerpt from A Problem with Werewolves. Dan's girlfriend presents him with an unpleasant surprise.

Monique stepped back, and her eyes captured mine. “I’m a vampire.”

A three-word statement of the impossible, I thought. I searched her face but failed to detect any sign that she was joking or subjecting me to some test.

“I’m a two-hundred-and-fifty-year-old vampire. I was born in a small chateau not far from Grenoble. A distant relative attacked me when I was thirty years old and made me into an undead creature. After that horrible evening, I lost my husband and two daughters. They were eleven and seven.”

I couldn’t swallow, and my racing pulse thrummed throughout my body. Her serious manner didn't change. I looked at the remaining whiskey and downed it in one gulp. Though the room was chilly, perspiration formed on my forehead. This isn’t real, I thought.

Eternal Lovers - poem of vampire lovers by Neil Benson

Eternal Lovers -

From the moment I awake,
my thoughts are of you.
You took my life,
and made me immortal.

Our lives are entwined,
never to part.
Together in bed,
always so close.

You turn to face me,
and my love pours forth.
When you touch my face,
our loving begins.

Your tender kiss,
a nectar of sweet love.
The caress of my body,
sets me aflame.

Our passion grows greater,
at the press of our breasts.
You touch me deeply,
and I'm open to you.

Your fangs flick lightly,
on my sensitive core.
Only a moment more,
and sweet ecstasy is mine.

Now my turn to pleasure you,
and our love is complete.

from A Problem with Werewolves in the Dark Journeys anthology

"Pulling the trigger on the shotgun after the werewolf has left to its feet and is descending toward your body with its extended claws aimed at your heart is a waste of time."
Baron Adolph Rothstein in "Killing Supernatural Creatures."

I got out of the car, turned, and fired both barrels of the shotgun towards a blurred figure racing at me. The werewolf howled and grabbed its right hind leg. I reached for two more slugs as the beast hobbled toward me. I put one slug in a chamber but fumbled the other. “Idiot,” I muttered to myself and finally chambered both slugs. The top of the werewolf’s head disappeared when my shotgun roared at the creature. The beast’s forward momentum carried it into me. The body and the rest of the werewolf’s head hit my chest, and I bounced off the car. I lost my grip on the shotgun as I fell to the ground, and I experienced a sharp pain in my left shoulder. Temporarily stunned, I took a deep breath and .......more.
