from A Problem with Werewolves short story in Dark Journeys

Clouds covered the moon, and I couldn’t see what had caught her attention. A brief shaft of moonlight revealed an enormous, heavily muscled werewolf, close to seven feet tall. When the beast opened its mouth, three-inch-long canines glistened in the light. This was the alpha male whose pack we had just destroyed. Its massive chest and arms made Shaquille O’Neal look slender. As it slowly moved toward Monique, I put the shotgun to my shoulder and closed the distance with the beast.

The werewolf strode to within fifteen feet of Monique when it suddenly changed direction and charged at me. The beast ran so fast I barely had time to pull the triggers. It anticipated my action and pivoted to the side, avoiding both bullets. The werewolf turned and resumed its charge. I grabbed a slug, but I knew I didn’t have time to pull the trigger before it would be on me. I cringed as I awaited its attack. The werewolf was less than three yards from me when it fell forward and hit the ground with a loud thump.

I fired both barrels as the beast lunged at me. The giant figure staggered backward after the slugs entered its chest. It stopped, then took a step in my direction, even though blood flowed freely from two large wounds. I reached for more ammunition, but I had used all the slugs in the bandoleer. The beast took one more step toward me, and I grabbed the end of the barrels........

Unholy Embrace - an encounter with a vampire

Frank, a tall, young architect who learns that the beautiful woman met at a bar is a real vampire. When she suggests they go back to his place, he agrees. Once there, he questions his sanity in spending the evening with her.

“You’re an exceptional man.” Her gaze caught mine, telling me that she was not playing any more.
“That’s quite a compliment.” I got the impression she measured me in ways I didn't understand.
“May I look through your library?” she asked, examining my bookcases.
“Sure.” I was uneasy with her tendency to ask permission after the fact.
She looked at the titles for several minutes then pulled out Dr. Bova’s book on immortality and extending life. “Immortal life holds a fascination for you,” she said. “You’ll find living a long time doesn’t bring the answers to the questions you seek.”
“Am I to assume you know that from personal experience?”
She put her finger under my chin and kissed me on the lips. “I’ve seen the passing of more seasons then you could ever imagine. Perhaps, if I like you, I’ll tell you about them.”
“That would be interesting.” I'm being seduced by a vampire. Am I out of my freaking mind?
“Hush,” Nessa said, as if she could hear my thoughts. She brushed my cheek with her fingertips, pressed her lips to mine, and parted them with her tongue.

Unholy Embrace  is a swift paced, action-packed novel about the relationship between a mortal man and his immortal female vampire lover as they fight werewolves, vampires, and other creatures in their effort to kill a soul eating demon.

Unholy Embrace a vampire novel - meeting with a vampire in Central Park

Frank  gets a harsh reminder that walking in Central Park at night can be very dangerous.
When I turned around, Viscount D'Alessio stood ten feet in front of me. The hairs on the back of my neck rose. My body froze and my heart beat against my chest.

“Fancy meeting you here,” he said with a malicious smile.

“What do you want?” My voice cracked. I felt perspiration forming on my forehead.

“An opportunity to chat with you, become better acquainted.” His smile widened, making his teeth more obvious, as he stepped toward me. I looked around and saw no one. I turned and ran, but I hadn't gone ten strides when I found him in front of me.

“Running won't save you, and your precious little tart isn't here to rescue you.” He grabbed my throat before I could take a step, holding me off the ground. “It's time to have the dinner I promised myself the last time we met.”

He pulled me into the bushes when I heard a voice shout, “Stop. Police. Neither of you move.” A large man walked towards us. In his left hand he held his police shield. With his right he pointed a large revolver at us.

“What a bother.” The Viscount tossed me into the bushes. “I'll take care of you next. Make a move and your death will be slow and excruciating.” He raised his hands as he walked towards the officer.

Unholy Embrace vampire novel by Neil Benson - a journey beneath the streets of Manhattan

Strange creatures lurk beneath the streets of Manhattan where Nessa takes Frank on their quest to find the demon. ***********

In a few minutes, a train wheeled into the station, and everybody but us got on it. When the train pulled away, she checked to see if we were alone. Using her fingertips, she lifted the metal plate a couple of inches off the floor. Then she grabbed hold of it with both hands and set it two feet away from the hole.

I looked into the hole and saw the concrete platform twenty feet below us. “How do we get down there?”

“First I jump, then you jump, and I catch you.”

“What?” My heartburn got worse. I doubted there was any antacid in the backpack

“What did I say that you didn't understand?” She frowned.

“I understood what you said. It's the plan I’m wondering about.”

“There's a rope in the backpack, but nothing to tie it to. Besides, could you climb down the rope?”

“Point taken. I feel awkward about jumping and having you catch me.”

“Get over your male vanity. Please do what I ask you.” She rolled her eyes. “Put on your backpack and jump.” She turned and jumped through the hole, landing on her feet so as if she was a trained acrobat. She looked up and motioned for me.

I took a deep breath and jumped into her waiting arms. Nessa caught me and put me on my feet. I followed her when she walked toward the south end of the deserted platform. She walked on the balls of her feet, like a hunter tracking down her prey

Mozart meets a vampire in Unholy Embrace by Neil Benson

Nessa meets Mozart

1774

I ended a period of isolation and attended parties once more. With Josef's help I bought a new house in a different area, but still close to my farm. By moving to a new location, I could become thirty years old again because none of the people there knew me. Solomon Abramowitz invited me to a reception at his home, where I met several influential Viennese businessmen, enabling me to reenter the Viennese society.

One evening. I attended a piano concerto written by Mozart and decided to meet him. My escort, Count Ludwig Steinmetz, was one of the most influential men in the city.

After the concert ended, I gazed into Ludwig's eyes. “Do you think it would be possible for me to meet Mozart?” I asked as I stroked his arm.

“Of course. I will speak to the Director of music. Please wait here.” A short time later he returned with a big grin on his face.

“There will be a reception next door. I made sure we would be among the first to meet him.” He proffered me his arm, and we went to the house next door to the recital hall.

After we entered the building, we walked into a large reception room. A cluster of people gathered at the far end. Ludwig marched straight through the crowd until we stood within ten feet of the young genius.

When the music master, Herr Metzenbaum, saw the Count, he led us forward.

“Count Ludwig Steinmetz, may I introduce Amadeus Mozart?”

“Your Excellency, a pleasure.” He made a slight bow to the count.

“I would like to introduce one of Vienna's most lovely women, my good friend, Nessa Harcanu.”

As Mozart's examined my body, he nodded ever so slightly. “You are quite lovely, Fräulein, Harcanu.”

“Thank you. I enjoyed your concert immensely.”

“Thank you,” he said and turned his attention to the Count.

I put my hand over my mouth to hide a smile. The young genius had an eye for women, but he had a bigger eye for potential benefactors.

Frank Thornton never believed in the supernatural until the night he met Nessa. From that night on, the night she confessed to being a vampire, his life ceased to be simple. Between nights of exotic sex, battles with werewolves, and an epic battle for survival, they learn more and more about one another and findthat true love can cross all barriers.

Despite the fact that both Frank and Nessa are your average kind of characters, the kind that can be found in nearly any vampire novel – he’s the disbeliever, she’s the been-there-seen-that vampiress – they both possess strong character and an intriguing story. Frank is an honest and down-to-earth kind of guy with a protective streak that very well may get him killed before long. He’s willing and practically able to do anything and everything needed to keep her by his side, vampire or not. He’s steadfast and completely, totally smitten with her.

She’s got a history longer than that of the United States and yet she notonly brings Frank home but also decides she wants – and needs – to keep him around for the long term. She can be cold and aloof when she needs to be but, when it comes to Frank, she’s all his. Together, they make a deadly team, fighting werewolves, demons, and a psychotic, spurned vampire that’s been haunting Nessa for centuries. And when they’re alone, they explode with passion and desire so hot they nearly combust.

In today’s world, you never quite know what’s lurking in the shadows. Justask Frank Thornton. He started out as an architect to the rich and quickly went from being happily oblivious to fighting a variety of the denizens of the night. However, just so long as he’s fighting alongside his girlfriend, the vampire Nessa, he’s determined to save the world. Unholy Embrace is an enjoyable story that is sure to engage and satisfy any lover of vampire fiction.

Unholy Embrace a vampire novel by Neil Benson - in the eyes of a vampire

A mortal, Frank, enters a wannabe vampire bar in Manhattan and finds himself scrutinized by a beautiful real vampire.

“You're not an overgrown boy or a self-styled stud eager to add me to his sexual trophy case.”

“You can tell that just by looking at me?”

“That and much more.” “Okay, tell me what you know.” Her gaze caught mine as I issued the challenge.

“You're an architect in his mid-thirties who would rather be a painter,” she said without hesitation. She leaned back in her chair, steepling her fingers, her bright green eyes studying my every move.

“How do you know that?” Was she a mind reader or something?“There are traces of light green ocher paint under the nails of your index and middle fingers on your right hand.” I couldn't see anything, even when I held my nails under a light.

“I have excellent vision, especially at night.”

“There's nothing there to see,” I said.

“You failed to wash off all the ocher and pale yellow egg tempera paint you used.” She licked her lips.

Nessa had just described the colors I had been working with earlier in the evening. “I don't know how you guessed what I was using, but there's no way anyone could see the paint in this dim light.”

“A vampire could.” She leaned forward, opening her mouth, and showing the tips of sharp pointed fangs.

The Phantom Paragrapher review of "An Unholy Embrace" by Neil Benson

Review of "An Unholy Embrace" by Paula Phillips

Are you loving the whole mortal/vampire love storyline ? Edward and Bella in Twilight , Elena and Stefan / Damon in Vampire Diaries , Dylan and Claire in The Gates (though Claire is now turned) , Alexander/ Jagger and Raven in Vampire Kisses and Dimitri and Rose in Vampire Academy or Hugo and Elizabeth in The Point and who can forget our Sookie Stackhouse and Eric/Bill.

With Vampire Novels now on the rise for the last two years , reading an article -the world of Vampires has hit the money-making world of $7 Billion Dollars in Books, Movies, TV and Merchandise.

Today's Review is that whole mortal/vampire love affair but in today's book it contains the twist of the female being the Vampire and the mortal being the male.

A popular storyline lately has been the tale of the mortal/vampire love story and the majority of them have ended up writing the male as a Vampire and the female as the lovestruck mortal. One thing that I really liked in Neil Benson's book is that he decided to use gender reversed roles and make the male the lovestruck mortal and the female the Vampire. Having it this way, was a nice change for once.

The story starts when Frank and Nessa are out on a date and are attacked by Werewolves, the attack causes Nessa to extract her fangs and go all- vampirey , something that Frank hasn't really experienced before. From then on , we are transported back to the beginning -where they first met and how their relationship started and of course how they reached the point in the story.

What follows is Nessa explaining and opening her 400yr old heart to Frank and telling her story on how she became a Vampire starting in Hungary all the way to her travels via Vienna and Paris to the Present time in New York.

We read as the Werewolves attacks are just the beginning as Nessa has been on the run nearly 400 years and has been tracked by Narice - the vampire lover of the Vampire who turned Nessa and in return Nessa Killed out of vengeance.

When Frank realises the consequences and danger of being with Nessa , can he stand strong and embrace the unholiness of being with a Vampire or will he take the white feather coward option out and leave Nessa to follow a path of a normal life ?

An excellent story that shows readers in a paranormal and supernatural way that no matter what happens and how terrifying obstacles can be - love between not only mortals but mortals and supernaturals can stick tog

Unholy Embrace vampire novel by Neil Benson - an excerpt Paris 1899

New Year's Eve 1899: Nessa walking alone through the streets of Paris.

At 11:30 in the evening, I walked out of my house and joined the thousands of people celebrating the coming of the new century. As I walked among the crowd, I felt disconnected from the people and the celebrations. Alive, or rather undead, for three hundred years, I wandered among people mostly under age forty. What did I have to celebrate? Living forever had been more of a curse than a blessing.

I was walking joylessly through the streets, when a tall, dark-haired man came up beside me. He turned and wrapped his arms around me. He kissed me with great vigor on both cheeks. His eyes glistened, and I could smell the alcohol on his breath.

“It is a great time in which to live,” he said.

“I suppose so.”

“You suppose so? Mademoiselle, you are young and beautiful. The twentieth century will be filled with wonders we cannot imagine.” He put his arms on my shoulders and looked into my eyes. “Be alive, be alive. There is so much joy in life.” He kissed me on the lips then walked away into the crowd, sharing his joy with other women.

If he only knew.

Unholy Embrace vampire novel by Neil Benson - a fight to death with werewolves

Nessa and Frank have an encounter with werewolves of the worst kind.
Nessa ran at a werewolf that charged her. They collided and fell to the ground.

The creature staggered from the impact, and she grabbed it by the throat with both hands. It thrust its jaw out, trying to bite her face with its large canines.

She pushed its head back until the creature couldn't reach her with its mouth.

The werewolf grabbed at her arms to no avail as she tightened her grip until she broke its neck. Nessa pushed the werewolf to the ground, stood over it, and snarled. The moonlight revealed blood dripping from her fangs.

I scanned the area to check for more werewolves. Seeing none, I took a deep breath and realized my shirt was wet. When I put my hand to my chest, I felt the warm, clotting fluid mingled with tufts of hair. I was glad my stomach was empty when I gagged. I started to speak to Nessa when I saw her turn and walk toward the other side of the building. I went around the car, following a step behind but parallel to her.

A cloud covering the moon prevented me from seeing what caught her attention. When the cloud passed, the moonlight revealed a huge, heavily muscled werewolf, seven feet tall. The creature growled, revealing three inch-long, curved canines that came to sharp points. The enraged werewolf was the alpha male ...

Unholy Embrace vampire novel by Neil Benson -loving a vampire

Frank, a mortal, thinks heavily on an emotional commitment to his girlfriend, a vampire.

After leaving her apartment, I was walking toward Central Park within five minutes. If I took too long to decide, our relationship would end. Nessa had been lonely for over four hundred years. She made a choice about me, perhaps impulsively, but now I knew how much I meant to her. She would be devastated if I rejected her, and I had no wish to be the cause of such pain. But I also needed to consider the risks involved.

I walked along the outside of the park until I found myself in front of the Museum of Natural History. For all the information it contained, it didn't have displays about creatures the visitors were better off not knowing. Nessa, werewolves, and demons didn't exist in any of the museum's catalogs. However, she was also a woman, one that aroused the strongest feelings I had ever experienced. Should I make a commitment based mostly on feelings? I was always so rational. To go with her was to step into the unknown and far beyond my comfort zone.

When I looked at my watch, I saw five hours remained until dawn. For once in my life I decided to go where my heart led. I walked south until I hailed a cab, and in a few minutes I was back at her apartment. The strong need I felt to be with her contrasted with how I felt two hours ago. Time is not measured in minutes or hours but by the manner in which we experience our lives. When I stood in front of her door, I knew my decision.

Unholy Embrace vampire novel by Neil Benson - An Excerpt: the confrontation with the demon

Frank, deceived by the demon, opens the door and all hell breaks loose.

“Frank, I told you not to unlock the door,” Nessa said.

When the demon turned to face her, she reached inside her pocket and withdrew gold powder she threw at it. The demon put its hands in front of its face and shook its head. Nessa threw more powder at the creature and chanted in Latin. The Huli Jing was unable to move, and smoke came off its body and arms. She threw more powder on the demon while she continued chanting. The demon, covered in the fine gold powder, hunched its shoulders while contracting into a tighter mass. As it did so, the smoke continued to increase.

Nessa pulled a silver dagger out of her coat and stabbed the demon in the chest. It emitted a loud, “Hhhhcccchhh,” sound. Greenish fluid flowed down its chest, but the hole made by the knife closed up.

She stabbed at it again. This time the demon grabbed the end of the dagger, broke it off, and tossed it away. Nessa clenched her fist.

The Huli Jing shook its body. Some of the fine gold powder flew into the air, and smoke coming off it decreased. The demon became brighter and brighter, until it was almost impossible to look at. The creature hissed at Nessa, and she bared her fangs and snarled.

Her knees buckled, and she pulled her cape over her head. The light created by the demon intensified, and Nessa fell backward into what remained of the doorway. The demon struggled to move towards her, hindered by the remaining golden dust on it.

Unholy Embrace vampire novel by Neil Benson - seduced by a vampire

Frank learns that an alpha female vampire is in charge when it comes to sex.

“Come.” She led me to my bedroom

Unholy Embrace vampire novel by Neil Benson - seeking ancient wisdom to fight a demon

seeking anccient wisdom to fight a demon

An old man sat in an old, carved teak chair He wore a white silk robe with a black-and-white yin and yang symbol. He was almost bald, with parchment like skin, and a long white beard. His head tilted downward as he looked at us through half closed eyes.

“Come forward,” he said in a soft voice with a Chinese accent.

Nessa and I moved closer until we were within six feet of him.

“Why does a nightwalker seek me out?”

She bowed. “Honorable one, we have a dangerous demon to deal with. A friend told me you might help us.”

“How did you get this?” He held up the ivory carving. His face remained expressionless, and his voice a whisper.

“About a hundred years ago I was in Paris. I met a monk who called himself Shien Po. We talked one evening, and he gave it to me as a parting gift. He said it would be useful one day.”

The old man smiled. “A greater honor than you realize. You talked with Yuan-Li Quan.” Nessa looked up and her eyes widened. “The ancient Immortal chose to wander through Western Europe at a time of change. If he saw no evil in you, then I can find none. I have forgotten my manners. I am Chen Li.”

“I am Nessa and this is Frank.”

Chen Li nodded at me and looked back at her. “And who sent you to me?”

“The Knower who lives beneath the streets.”
