Unholy Embrace a vampire novel - in the eyes of a vampire

mortal man meets a beautiful immortal vampire

A mortal, Frank, enters a wannabe vampire bar in Manhattan and finds himself scrutinized by a beautiful real vampire.
“You're not an overgrown boy or a self-styled stud eager to add me to his sexual trophy case.”
“You can tell that just by looking at me?”
“That and much more.”
“Okay, tell me what you know.” Her gaze caught mine as I issued the challenge.
“You're an architect in his mid-thirties who would rather be a painter,” she said without hesitation. She leaned back in her chair, steepling her fingers, her bright green eyes studying my every move.
“How do you know that?” Was she a mind reader or something?“There are traces of light green ocher paint under the nails of your index and middle fingers on your right hand.” I couldn't see anything, even when I held my nails under a light.
“I have excellent vision, especially at night.”
“There's nothing there to see,” I said.
“You failed to wash off all the ocher and pale yellow egg tempera paint you used.” She licked her lips.
Nessa had just described the colors I had been working with earlier in the evening. “I don't know how you guessed what I was using, but there's no way anyone could see the paint in this dim light.”
“A vampire could.” She leaned forward, opening her mouth, and showing the tips of sharp pointed fangs.
“Are those real?” I asked in a voice barely a croak. My heart beat faster and the hairs on the nape of my neck stood up.

Unholy Embrace  is a swift paced, action-packed novel about the relationship between a mortal man and his immortal female vampire lover as they fight werewolves, vampires, and other creatures in their effort to kill a soul eating demon.

The House on Blackstone Moor by Carol Gill - reviewed by Neil Benson

The House on Blackstone Moor by Carol Gill

The author invites the reader to a gripping Victorian era tale of horror on the first page. We meet Rose,a young woman, after she discovers that her father killed her mother and sister and then himself. Rose is so grief-stricken others must take care of her. Unfortunately for Rose, "care" turns is a trip to the insane asylum.

Rose encounters new horrors during her stay at the asylum. The author has the unique ability to put us inside Rose's head so we see her world through her eyes and experience her tragic tale as if it were our own. The head of the hospital, Doctor Bannion, rescues Rose from the asylum by taking her to the Dartons. They employ her as a governess for their two children.

At first, it seems that Rose has found a refuge from the horrors she has experienced. She has great affection for the children she cares for, and they for her. She falls in love with the Louis Darton, who returns her affection. But all is not as it seems, and Rose slowly learns the true nature of her situation.
Rose sees the children commit a horrible act, but she refuses to accept what they did. When she sees a vampire doing what a vampire always does, Rose realizes she is in the midst of horror and evil on an immense scope. The author creates a time and place and characters that are not for the faint of heart.

Ms. Gill uses "sacred" portions of vampire lore in new ways. To reveal them would be to say too much. As Rose plunges deeper into the evil maelstrom, she makes decisions that change her very essence. She moves to the dark of her own accord, and the hellish nature of the events in her life worsen. Louis Darton rescues her time and again, but he is part of the darkness.

Gypsies aid and befriend Rose in her fight to survive the onslaught of evil forces. The battles between the forces who seek to destroy Rose and those who protect her rage to the end of the novel. The immensity of the evil that Rose encounters grows greater and greater. At the end of the novel Rose must make the final decision about her fate.

Blackstone Moor is a creative and imaginative novel. It is well-written and the author demonstrates a mastery of the subject matter. The plot is complex and the characters are well delineated. The author created a horror novel best not read before going to sleep.

If you like good horror novels, buy this one. Below is a link to other reviews for this novel on Amazon.

Unholy Embrace vampire novel by Neil Benson - The vampire as beauty and the beast.

In my vampire novel, Nessa, the vampire, is a beautiful, elegant woman. But as her mortal lover, Frank, finds out early in the novel, she is capable of acts of physical violence he finds difficult to comprehend. Furthermore, when he sees her fangs dripping with blood, the lovely woman he loves is transformed into the hideous, undead creature of myth.

The novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson is about a London lawyer named Gabriel John Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr Henry Jekyll, and the vile Mr Edward Hyde. The work is famous for its vivid portrayal of a split personality, split in the sense that within the same person there is both an apparently good and an evil personality each being quite distinct from the other. The novella's impact is such that it has become a part of the language, with the phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" coming to mean a person who is vastly different in moral character from one situation to the next.
In my novel, Nessa strives deny her vampirism as much as possible. She wants to be the "good human," not the "evil" vampire. However, there are times when circumstances force her to become the lethal vampire in her own self-defense, or to save Frank. Even acting in self defense, her ferocity and physical power enable her to act in a way most people would find abhorrent. There are instances in the novel when her actions go far beyond self-defense, and the crueler, aspect of her nature is revealed.

We all struggle with our own impulses of good and evil. In order to retain our essential humanity it is necessary we keep our evil impulses at bay. Recent history has shown that under certain circumstances "good people" can act in ways that contravene the ethical and moral standards under which we live.

Nessa, despite her desire to be human, is the vampire, the beast. So beauty and the beast reside side-by-side.

Unholy Embrace a vampire novel by Neil Benson - meeting with a vampire in Central Park

Unholy Embrace a vampire novel by Neil Benson - meeting with a vampire in Central Park

Frank runs into an old enemy

When I turned around, Viscount D'Alessio stood ten feet in front of me. The hairs on the back of my neck rose. My body froze and my heart beat against my chest.

“Fancy meeting you here,” he said with a malicious smile.

“What do you want?” My voice cracked. I felt perspiration forming on my forehead.

“An opportunity to chat with you, become better acquainted.” His smile widened, making his teeth more obvious, as he stepped toward me. I looked around and saw no one. I turned and ran, but I hadn't gone ten strides when I found him in front of me.

“Running won't save you, and your precious little tart isn't here to rescue you.” He grabbed my throat before I could take a step, holding me off the ground. “It's time to have the dinner I promised myself the last time we met.”

He pulled me into the bushes when I heard a voice shout, “Stop. Police. Neither of you move.” A large man walked towards us. In his left hand he held his police shield. With his right he pointed a large revolver at us.

“What a bother.” The Viscount tossed me into the bushes. “I'll take care of you next. Make a move and your death will be slow and excruciating.” He raised his hands as he walked towards the officer.

Unholy Embrace - Mortal Man Loving a Female Vampire

Frank, a mortal,  thinks heavily on an emotional commitment to his girlfriend Nessa, a vampire.

"After leaving her apartment, I was outside walking toward Central Park within five minutes. If I took too long to decide, our relationship would end. Nessa had been lonely for over four hundred years. She made a choice about me, perhaps impulsively, but now I knew how much I meant to her. She would be devastated if I rejected her, and I had no wish to be the cause of such pain. But I also needed to consider the risks involved.

I walked along the outside of the park until I found myself in front of the Museum of Natural History. For all the information it contained, it didn't have displays about creatures the visitors were better off not knowing. Nessa, werewolves, and demons didn't exist in any of the museum's catalogs. However, she was also a woman, one that aroused the strongest feelings I had ever experienced. Should I make a commitment based mostly on feelings? I was always so rational. To go with her was to step into the unknown and far beyond my comfort zone.

When I looked at my watch, I saw five hours remained until dawn. For once in my life I decided to go where my heart led. I walked south until I hailed a cab, and in a few minutes I was back at her apartment. The strong need I felt to be with her contrasted with how I felt two hours ago. Time is not measured in minutes or hours but by the manner in which we experience our lives. When I stood in front of her door, I knew my decision."

Unholy Embrace vampire novel by Neil Benson - seduced by a vampire

Frank learns that an alpha female vampire is in charge when it comes to sex.

“May I look through your library?” she asked, examining my bookcases.

“Sure.” I was uneasy with her tendency to ask permission after the fact.

She looked at the titles for several minutes then pulled out Dr. Bova’s book on immortality and extending life. “Immortal life holds a fascination for you,” she said. “You’ll find living a long time doesn’t bring the answers to the questions you seek.”

“Am I to assume you know that from personal experience?”

She put her finger under my chin and kissed me on the lips. “I’ve seen the passing of more seasons then you could ever imagine. Perhaps, if I like you, I’ll tell you about them.”

“That would be interesting.” I'm being seduced by a vampire. Am I out of my freaking mind?

“Hush,” Nessa said, as if she could hear my thoughts. She brushed my cheek with her fingertips, pressed her lips to mine, and parted them with her tongue.

“Come.” She led me to my bedroom

Unholy Embrace vampire novel by Neil Benson - failing to kill an enemy

Nessa fails to kill an enmey.

1676

I had just stepped outside my house on a moonless night, when a pair of hands grabbed me around the neck. Caught off balance, I was pulled into bushes next to my home. When I fell to the ground, I saw an open mouth with four fangs descending towards my throat. I put my hands around the other vampire's chest and thrust upwards.

The vampire staggered backwards, and I stood up. Though larger, my opponent was weaker. She snarled and tried to grab my throat, but I pushed her to the ground. I fell on top of her and pinned her arms to the ground.

“Who are you?” I asked.

She didn't answer, but struggled to get out of my grip.

When I hit her on the side of the head, she lay still. As I examined her unwashed face and dirty dress, I remembered her. Narice, I thought.

I held her jaw to get a better look at her.

“Narice, why did you attack me?”

“You killed the master.” Her open mouth revealed her fangs and her slit-like eyes glared at me.

“He was a monster that deserved to die. Why are you angry at me because I killed him?”

“When he died, I suffered great pain for many days. You had no bond with him like I did.”

“Bonded to him? I despised him. He killed my husband and took away my life. I should kill you, but I will let you live in your misery. If I ever smell your scent again, I will find you and tear out your throat.”

I let go of her jaw and stood up.

After she arose, she stared at me for a few moments. Then she turned and ran into the woods.

I stayed outside until dawn, making sure she was gone

Unholy Embrace vampire novel by Neil Benson - waiting for her mortal lover

Nessa waiting for Frank to return to her. A vampire has eternal life, but waiting during the most important times can be excruciating *************************.

I hoped, under the right circumstances, I could explain to Frank that even though I was a vampire, he had never been, nor would he ever be, in any danger from me. If I have learned anything in over four hundred years, it's that life rarely works out as we would like it to, but rather in random, unpredictable ways we neither want nor expect. It's at those moments, we must be flexible and adapt, or watch our hopes and dreams evaporate before our eyes.

The argument between us over the circumstances of our coming together was pointless. Although I manipulated him to some degree, it was unfair for him to blame everything on me. I tapped into a sexual side of him with which he had not been in contact. Although not shy, there is a cautious and, at times, distrustful side to him. He not only let go of his inhibitions with me, but he got in touch with levels of passion he had never experienced before.

It would have been simpler for me, and for us, if Frank had accepted my offer of immortality. But did I want to condemn Frank to an eternal life living at the fringe of humanity, living only at night, never seeing the colors of the world during daylight? I knew he would be tempted to accept my offer based on the books he had in his apartment. But I couldn't be sure, and I didn't want him to make that choice. I fell in love with a mortal man, not with another vampire. The qualities I loved and admired such as his honesty, tenderness, and his passion for life were based on his humanity.

Unholy Embrace vampire novel By Neil Benson- sex with a vampire

I'm being seduced by a vampire. Am I out of my freaking mind?

Hush,” Nessa said, as if she could hear my thoughts. She brushed my cheek with her fingertips, pressed her lips to mine, and parted them with her tongue.

“Come.” She led me to my bedroom. As Nessa moved me to the foot of the bed, I reached for her. However, she was quicker, putting her arms around my neck and pulling my head toward hers. Her mouth sought mine and we kissed passionately for several moments. She broke off the kiss, stepped back, reached for the bottom of my dark blue merino sweater, and pulled it over my head. Nessa kissed my chest and flicked her tongue over my left nipple, causing me to tremble with pleasure. She unbuckled my pants, dropped them to the floor, and pulled down my briefs. She lowered me to the bed, handling me like a small child, despite my outweighing her by more than seventy pounds.

I backed away and started to rise, when she laughed.

“Sit down. I've no intention of hurting you.”

“That's good to know.” I laughed nervously. “What do you want from me?”

“To get to know you better.”
\
“Why?” Considering what I had seen in the last five minutes, a little caution seemed appropriate.

Unholy Embrace by Neil Benson - Nessa meets Pablo Picasso

Art continuously evolves. Pablo Picasso, at the forefront of current changes, unveiled a new concept with his Blue Period paintings. After moving to Paris in 1904, he frequented the home of Gertrude and Leo Stein.

One Saturday night, I saw him on the other side of the room. He looked at me, gestured to Gertrude, and they walked in my direction. I smiled inwardly, wondering what he had in mind. Pablo had a notorious reputation as a seducer of women.

“Nessa, this is my good friend Pablo Picasso,” Gertrude said.

“Mr. Picasso, it is a pleasure to meet you. I have seen your work, and I think it is marvelous.”

“The pleasure is all mine,” Pablo said in a purring voice. “Please call me Pablo.”

“If you will both excuse me, I need to attend to other guests.” Gertrude walked away.

Pablo took me by the arm and maneuvered me into a remote corner.

“I find you attractive and would like to meet with you sometime.” He stroked my arm.

“I do not think that would be a good idea.”

“Many times women say no when they really mean yes.” His fingers strayed from my arm to my breast.

When I took hold of his fingers and squeezed, his eyes opened wide. “Gentlemen should always understand the meaning of the word no.”

After snatching his fingers from my grasp, he turned about and walked away.
