In the vampire novel, UnholyEmbrace, the vampire that turned me is described as a horrible looking creaturewhose facial features bear little resemblance to humanity. While some moviesand books have depict vampires as strange looking creatures, this cannot bepossible. Vampires are made from humans; therefore, they must look like humans.However, there is an exception. This relates to the stories of the "PureBloods," which are thousands of years old.

Much material points to Lilith,Adam's first wife, as the source for vampires. According to a number of sources,Lilith was made the first wife of Adam. These sources claim that Lilith wasfashioned from the earth at either the same time as Adam, or before Adam. Thismade Lilith Adam's equal. Lilith refused to lie on her back while Adam took thedominant position in sex (missionary style). Lilith believed they should makelove as equals. Adam was against this, wanting his wife to be submissive, and Lilithleft the Garden of Eden rather than comply.

Adam complained to God, whoallegedly sent Angels to talk to Lilith telling her to comply. It is reportedshe refused, and as a result, the Angels killed her children. Lilith soughtrevenge by taking the form of a serpent who seduced Eve to eat the fruit ofknowledge. When Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden, Adamendured a period of celibacy as penance. During this time, Lilith was reportedto have caused nocturnal emissions from Adam. She collected his semen andimpregnated herself with it, giving birth to demons. These children of Lilithcalled Lilin or Lilim, "night-demons," or the modern term, vampires.

It is my strong belief, that in some fashion, Lilith becamethe mother of the first vampires, referred to as Pure Bloods, a term found inAncient Babylonian Tablets. I have not been able to find any sources explainingwhy Lilith's progeny developed horrible, nonhuman appearances.

Several weeks ago, I wrote about myconfrontation with a so-called psychic vampire while I was sitting in myneighborhood pub. After an initial onslaught, I was able to defend myself andeventually humiliated the strange man. Since then, I have received severalthreatening letters by other persons calling them psychic vampires, but nothinghas transpired.

Fournights ago, I was leaving my neighborhood pub when I was confronted by a small,hag-like elderly woman, barely five feet tall. She looked like a witch out of abad fairy tale. Her long, gray hair was uncombed, and a beaklike nose dominatedher face. What concerned me the most, as she stood before me, were herpulsating, glowing eyes which bored into mine, giving me an instant,excruciating headache.
When I tried to step around her, she blocked my path.

"Get out of my way" I said as I reached out with my left hand tomove her out of my way.

"You'll pay for humiliating my friend," she said. She leapt up andbit me in the neck.

I felt a sharp stinging sensation as two fangs pierced my neck. I put my handsaround her throat and threw her to the ground.

"You'll suffer now," she said, and ran away with more speed than ayoung sprinter.

When I touched the side of my neck, I felt a red-hot, four inch-wide welt. Istaggered a few steps, but by then other people from the pub had been alertedto the commotion. My drinking buddy, Eddie Earnhardt, took me by my arm anddrove me to the nearby emergency room.

By the time the doctors examined me, I was feverish and disoriented.

In half-hour later, another doctor approached me.

"I'm Dr. Beauregard Johnston," he said. "They've called me inbecause I have considerable experience in treating poisonous bites, includinghuman ones.

I'm not sure this was a human bite," I said.

"What you mean?" he asked. Through my blurry eyes, I saw himstaring at me intently, trying to make sense of what I had just told him.

"You wouldn't believe. I have an acquaintance in Europe I would likeyou to talk to. I believe he may be of help."

"If you think he can help, I'd be glad to talk to him," thedoctors said.

I took my cell phone out and called Mr. Radescu, the vampire I had met inBucharest. Fortunately, I had stored his number in my contact file. It was 11p.m. in Bucharest. After several rings, I heard a deep, mellifluous voice.

"How can I help you?" he asked.

"How did you know I needed help?"

He chuckled. It is unlikely you called me just for a social chat."

"I was attacked and bitten by a small, witch-like woman."

"Did her fangs pierce your neck?"

"Yes."

"That is most unfortunate," he said. Where are you?"

"I'm in a hospital emergency room."

"Let me talk to the doctor."

"Dr. Johnson, my friend in Romania would like to talk to you." Ihanded him the phone.

"Hello, this is Dr. Johnson. Who am I speaking with?" Dr. Johnsonnodded several times as he listened to Mr. Radescu. At one point he asked,"Wolfsbane?" Then he listened some more. Finally, he said, "I'lldo as you say."

He returned my phone and shook his head. "I'm not sure what to make ofthis. However, your friend assures me the only way to cure you is to apply apoultice of something called wolfsbane to the puncture marks on your neck. Idon't believe in this vampire nonsense, but I will do what is necessary to helpyou. Mr. Radescu said he would contact someone in South Carolina who woulddeliver the wolfsbane to us within the hour."

That was the last thing I remembered before I passed out. Two days later, Iawoke in a hospital bed. A nurse's aide was sitting by my bed, and when she sawme open my eyes, she jumped up and ran out of the room. A few minutes later, anurse came in, checked my temperature, and took my blood pressure. Then shereached to the side of my neck and pulled off a foul smelling compress.

She smiled at me. "I'm glad to see you're still with us. Yourtemperature is normal and the swelling is greatly reduced."

I tried to speak, but couldn't because my throat was so dry. "Here'ssome water," she said, putting a container with a straw to my mouth.

I greedily imbibed the cool liquid. "What happened to me?"

"Two days ago, you passed out in the emergency room. Your fever rose to105°. A package of leaves arrived, and they were put into the poultice that Ijust took off your neck."

"Thank you," I said. As I lay in bed, I realized I owed my life toa 300 year-old vampire 4000 miles away in Romania. I knew that one day I wouldhave to repay this debt.

The description of my fight with a female white werewolf in Neil Benson's pseudo-novel is largely accurate. She appeared to be some kind of mutation enables her to shift from human form the werewolf form and back again within a matter of minutes.

When I turned around, a tall, muscular, blond haired young woman stood between me and the door. Her large hands held a six-foot long round metal pipe with both ends capped by pieces of finely sharpened steel. Silver coated the last few inches on the tips. She had a feral look on her fine featured face. The way she held the pipe, and balanced on the balls of her feet, indicated her training as a martial artist.

Nohuman, however skilled in the martial arts, could hope to take on a vampire, even when armed with a lethal weapon. When I examined her more closely, I saw the heavy covering of fine blonde hairs on her arms. She was a werewolf, requiring me to be more careful in fighting her.

When I took a step forward, she jabbed at me with the pipe, but not with the intent of stabbing me, but rather to test my reaction. I took another step, which gave her a chance to pierce my heart with the point of the pole. She jabbed at me, but before it reached my body, I grabbed it with both hands and snapped it towards the ceiling. She responded by snapping downwards on the pipe, breaking it in half. This caught me by surprise. The force of my own momentum carried my half of the pipe into the ceiling, almost jarring it from my hands leaving me defenseless for a moment...

After leaving her apartment, I was outside walking toward Central Park within five minutes. If I took too long to decide, our relationship would end. Nessa had been lonely for over four hundred years. She made a choice about me, perhaps impulsively, but now I knew how much I meant to her. She would be devastated if I rejected her, and I had no wish to be the cause of such pain. But I also needed to consider the risks involved.

Thenovella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert LouisStevenson is about a London lawyer named Gabriel John Utterson whoinvestigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr Henry Jekyll, andthe vile Mr Edward Hyde. The work is famous for its vivid portrayal of a splitpersonality, split in the sense that within the same person there is both anapparently good and an evil personality each being quite distinct from theother. The novella's impact is such that it has become a part of the language,with the phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" coming to mean a person who isvastly different in moral character from one situation to the next.

In mynovel, Nessa strives deny her vampirism as much as possible. She wants to bethe "good human," not the "evil" vampire. However, thereare times when circumstances force her to become the lethal vampire in her own self-defense,or to save Frank. Even acting in self defense, her ferocity and physical power enableher to act in a way most people would find abhorrent. There are instances inthe novel when her actions go far beyond self-defense, and the crueler, aspectof her nature is revealed.

We allstruggle with our own impulses of good and evil. In order to retain ouressential humanity it is necessary we keep our evil impulses at bay. Recenthistory has shown that under certain circumstances "good people" canact in ways that contravene the ethical and moral standards under which welive.

Nessa, despite her desire to be human, is thevampire, the beast. So beauty and the beast reside side-by-side.

Lisa Manetti's, The Gentling Box, combines excellent writing with a terrific horror tale. The reader is immediately drawn into a dark world where the sun never shines, and the sense of menace never ends. Ms. Manetti demonstrates that horror exists within the human mind and soul to a greater degree than in any zombie novel. Imre, the protagonist, finds himself in a seemingly endless tunnel of horror controlled by his mother-in-law, the sorceress Anyeta. He is continually forced to choose between the lesser of evils, and takes the reader on a journey none of us would ever want to experience. This novel is not for the faint of heart, and it is not a good idea to read this tale before you go to sleep.

Are you loving the whole mortal/vampire love storyline ? Edward and Bella in Twilight , Elena and Stefan / Damon in Vampire Diaries , Dylan and Claire in The Gates (though Claire is now turned) , Alexander/ Jagger and Raven in Vampire Kisses and Dimitri and Rose in Vampire Academy or Hugo and Elizabeth in The Point and who can forget our Sookie Stackhouse and Eric/Bill.

With Vampire Novels now on the rise for the last two years , reading an article -the world of Vampires has hit the money-making world of $7 Billion Dollars in Books, Movies, TV and Merchandise.

Today's Review is that whole mortal/vampire love affair but in today's book it contains the twist of the female being the Vampire and the mortal being the male.

A popular storyline lately has been the tale of the mortal/vampire love story and the majority of them have ended up writing the male as a Vampire and the female as the lovestruck mortal. One thing that I really liked in Neil Benson's book is that he decided to use gender reversed roles and make the male the lovestruck mortal and the female the Vampire. Having it this way, was a nice change for once.

The story starts when Frank and Nessa are out on a date and are attacked by Werewolves, the attack causes Nessa to extract her fangs and go all- vampirey , something that Frank hasn't really experienced before. From then on , we are transported back to the beginning -where they first met and how their relationship started and of course how they reached the point in the story.

What follows is Nessa explaining and opening her 400yr old heart to Frank and telling her story on how she became a Vampire starting in Hungary all the way to her travels via Vienna and Paris to the Present time in New York.

We read as the Werewolves attacks are just the beginning as Nessa has been on the run nearly 400 years and has been tracked by Narice - the vampire lover of the Vampire who turned Nessa and in return Nessa Killed out of vengeance.

When Frank realises the consequences and danger of being with Nessa , can he stand strong and embrace the unholiness of being with a Vampire or will he take the white feather coward option out and leave Nessa to follow a path of a normal life ?

An excellent story that shows readers in a paranormal and supernatural way that no matter what happens and how terrifying obstacles can be - love between not only mortals but mortals and supernaturals can stick tog

Let's assume that vampires, the undead kind, are real. When I first started writing Unholy Embrace, I was told by my editor vampires are by definition "evil." My response was to posit a question. If a sixteen-year-old who had never committed a mortal sin, and very few venal ones, was turned by a vampire, why would this person become evil? The response I received stated that if a vampire took the life, or the blood, from another person that made the vampire evil.

However, in recent years, we have seen movies such as Underworld, where the vampires ostensibly did not consume human blood. The vampires in the movie Underworld were a pretty rotten bunch and it would be hard to make a case they weren't evil. For some time, vampires have been able to obtain human blood from blood banks. Ergo, no need bite someone in the neck, lethal or otherwise.

So, if a young woman or man, living a virtually "pure" life, was turned into a vampire at the present time, there would be no need for this person to take blood from a mortal. Clearly, if a vampire kills, then the vampire is evil. However, this would be true of a mortal who commit murders. Without committing any acts that harm a mortal person, it seems to me that the vampire cannot necessarily be considered evil by solely by being one of the undead.

I'm sure that many people would tell me that I have oversimplified the issue or question. If I have, then I would like to hear the "complete" explanation of why a vampire would necessarily be considered evil.

I walked south until I hailed a cab, and in a few minutes I was back at her apartment. The strong need I felt to be with her contrasted with how I felt two hours ago. Time is not measured in minutes or hours but by the manner in which we experience our lives. When I stood in front of her door, I knew my decision."

Vampires, Vampires, and more Vampires.

The film industry first made a vampire movie in 1922. In Nosferatu, the vampire was the hideous looking creature on the left. Was this creature a human being at one time? Possibly, but he's not one of us anymore. He is a Vampire, and the "V" does not stand for victory. At least, not for us.

The gentleman on the right is Bella Lugosi who played Dracula in the 1932. This Dracula wasn't a hideous looking monster. Rather, Dracula is sly, insidious, and terrifying only when he needs to be. This is a vampire that is evil. The movie reeked with blatant overtones of sexuality even though everyone kept all their clothes on. It was all done in high camp.

There is no doubt that the creature on the left is a Vampire. Christopher Lee may have looked structurally human, but the eyes and fangs tell us that you didn't want to be in this creature's house after dark. I wouldn't want to be in this vampire's house during the day.

A new genre of vampires arose with Anne Rice's novel, Interview with the Vampire In 1976. Tom Cruise as Lestat is an urbane and sophisticated vampire. But beneath the surface lies a narcissistic and evil creature people came to know and love.He fears ennui more than as much as he fears the end of his existence.

In twilight, Anne Meyers presents a new vampire. Edward puts on sunglasses in the middle of the day and lives in a community in which cloudy days are the norm. Edward:Cullen says he is a vampire, and demonstrates superhuman powers, but so does Clark Kent. When I was doing the research for this post, I tried, but could not find, a single picture of Robert Pattinson with his fangs exposed in a movie sequence. More than a few people criticize the Twilight series many criticize as "humanizing" the vampire a bit too far.But, these novels were never written for adults, even though millions of adults read them.Twilight was named one of Publishers Weekly's Best Children's Books of 2005. Yes, one of the best children's books. I hope that the next vampire that dominates the big screen is in a movie made for adults.

When I was writing my vampire novel, Unholy Embrace, I used the Internet to provide me information about 18th-century Vienna or 19th century Paris to fill in the details of the 400 year life of my vampire Nessa.If I wanted to know when donating blood first became possible all I had to do was type in the correct words and Google search did the rest.I was even able learn about the type of dresses worn by women in Vienna in the middle of the 18th-century. Now that the novel is published, I'm not sure what I would do with that information. I don't think it would prove useful even on trivia night at my local bar.

Imagine that Clint Eastwood is saddling
up for the last time and that he has warrants for every crook, slime ball and miscreant on Wall Street and throughout the nation who contributed to the current financial disaster.
He is also under instructions to bring back the worst offenders dead
or alive. Along with him are Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, and Samuel Jackson. None of them have shaved recently, and they look like they have ridden from Silver City Nevada without a bath. They are the modern day four Horsemen of the apocalypse for financial felons. Don't be afraid, be very afraid.

They ride across the Brooklyn Bridge, through lower Manhattan to the Goldman Sachs Building. Clint, Morgan, and Samuel dismount while Gene proceeds up Broadway with a mule following behind him. Clint reaches into a leather pouch and pulls out a large handful of warrants. He distributes them to Morgan and Samuel, and the three of them walk up to the front door. They are immediately confronted by security guards, but when Clint squints at them the guards all melt away. The three men draw their weapons, enter the building, and then ride up the elevator. A half an hour later, 50 men are marched out of the building onto a waiting bus. This is no ordinary bus, it's a black bus with the words "Bound for Hell" written on the side of it.

After leaving the Goldman Sachs Building, the four horsemen proceed to Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan, and on to Citigroup. By the time they are finished at Citigroup six busloads of prisoners have been collected. While Clint, Morgan and Samuel have been rounding up their felons, Gene Hackman rode to Bernie Madoff's apartment. Gene rides up the elevator and knocks on Bernie's apartment door. When Bernie opens the door Gene sticks the warrant in front of his face and grabs him by the collar. Gene drags Bernie down every step and out the front door. He puts Bernie on the mule facing backwards, ties his feet together, and his hands behind him to the pommel.

Clint is chewing on a cigar when Gene rides up towing Bernie behind him. The four men ride to the Holland Tunnel; the six buses following them. A half hour later, the four horsemen emerge towing Bernie behind them. But the buses are nowhere to be seen. Screams are heard from within the tunnel, but when police are sent in to investigate they can't find the source of the screams. Neither can scientific investigators find any sign of the buses.

Even as Clint, Morgan, Samuel, and Gene ride south towards Washington, and eventually Charlotte, with an even larger bundle of warrants, the buses still don't emerge from the tunnel. In fact, the buses are never seen again. Perhaps the "Bound for Hell" on the side of the buses wasn't a metaphor. On to Washington. The buses filled with prisoners from the Senate, the House of Representatives, lobbyists, and other miscreants, also disappear never to be found again.

The screams continue for weeks and months. Ordinary drivers wearing earplugs are able to drive through the tunnel. However, anyone working in the financial industry is driven insane as soon as they enter the tunnel.

Undead Vampires, ranging from Dracula, created by Bram Stoker, to the more urbane Lestat, created by Anne Rice, all share two basic characteristics. They are dead, and they need to ingest blood from mortals to continue to exist. They also share common traits with mortals. They stand, talk, move, run, and carry out all sorts of physical activities.

How do vampires carry out their active physical existences? Humans, mortals, have complex biological systems that provide energy to the muscles, tendons, bones, etc. that enable us to carry out activities. Vampires are dead: their hearts don't beat; their lungs don't breathe; and their former biological energy producing systems are no longer functioning. Where do their muscles get energy? Dr. Katherine Ramsland wrote an entire book, The Science of Vampires, speculating about how vampires function and think. Dr. Ramsland could only speculate, because neither she nor anyone else has examined a "real undead vampire."

In the movies and in novels, vampires share blood with humans to turn them into vampires. How is this possible? Without hearts that beat, what keeps vampire blood flowing? Vampires are always depicted as being cold to the touch, quite logical since they are dead. Vampires are also depicted as being impervious to the cold. However, if they are cold-blooded creatures, and they are outside, or even inside, in freezing temperatures their blood would thicken. That issue has never been addressed to the best of my knowledge. It's not a matter of unanswerable questions as much as it is a illogical possibilities.

We've also seen, or read about, vampires turning into some kind of dust or smoke. The transformation of matter from one form, a solid, into another form, gaseous, requires heat or some kind of chemical process. Modern science has no means by which it can almost instantaneously turn a solid object into a gaseous one with the exception of a nuclear explosion. There's a lot of bad science going on when it comes to the undead vampire. The stories of these creatures arise from folklore and are given life not by some magical process, but by the creative imagination of writers. The reader also has to participate, because more than a little suspension of disbelief is required to go along with the idea. However, judging by the current popularity of vampire books, movies, and now television shows, science and logic of the furthest things from the minds of readers and viewers.

Some time ago, I wrote about my confrontation with a so-called psychic vampire while I was sitting in my neighborhood pub. After an initial onslaught, I was able to defend myself and eventually humiliated the strange man. Since then, I have received several threatening letters by other persons calling them psychic vampires, but nothing has transpired.

Four nights ago, I was leaving my neighborhood pub when I was confronted by a small, hag-like elderly woman, barely five feet tall. She looked like a witch out of a bad fairy tale. Her long, gray hair was uncombed, and a beaklike nose dominated her face. What concerned me the most, as she stood before me, were her pulsating, glowing eyes which bored into mine, giving me an instant, excruciating headache.

When I tried to step around her, she blocked my path.

"Get out of my way" I said as I reached out with my left hand to move her out of my way.

"You'll pay for humiliating my friend," she said. She leapt up and bit me in the neck.

I felt a sharp stinging sensation as two fangs pierced my neck. I put my hands around her throat and threw her to the ground.

"You'll suffer now," she said, and ran away with more speed than a young sprinter.

When I touched the side of my neck, I felt a red-hot, four inch-wide welt. I staggered a few steps, but by then other people from the pub had been alerted to the commotion. My drinking buddy, Eddie Earnhardt, took me by my arm and drove me to the nearby emergency room.

By the time the doctors examined me, I was feverish and disoriented.

In half-hour later, another doctor approached me.

"I'm Dr. Beauregard Johnston," he said. "They've called me in because I have considerable experience in treating poisonous bites, including human ones.

I'm not sure this was a human bite," I said.

"What you mean?" he asked. Through my blurry eyes, I saw him staring at me intently, trying to make sense of what I had just told him.

"You wouldn't believe my explanation. I have an acquaintance in Europe I would like you to talk to. I believe he may be of help."

"If you think he can help, I'd be glad to talk to him," the doctors said.

I took my cell phone out and called Mr. Radescu, the vampire I had met in Bucharest. Fortunately, I had stored his number in my contact file. It was 11 p.m. in Bucharest. After several rings, I heard a deep, mellifluous voice.

"How can I help you?" he asked.

"How did you know I needed help?"

He chuckled. It is unlikely you called me just for a social chat."

"I was attacked and bitten by a small, witch-like woman."

"Did her fangs pierce your neck?"

"Yes."

"That is most unfortunate," he said. Where are you?"

"I'm in a hospital emergency room."

"Let me talk to the doctor."

"Dr. Johnson, my friend in Romania would like to talk to you." I handed him the phone.

"Hello, this is Dr. Johnson. Who am I speaking with?" Dr. Johnson nodded several times as he listened to Mr. Radescu. At one point he asked, "Wolfsbane?" Then he listened some more. Finally, he said, "I'll do as you say."

He returned my phone and shook his head. "I'm not sure what to make of this. However, your friend assures me the only way to cure you is to apply a poultice of something called wolfsbane to the puncture marks on your neck. I don't believe in this vampire nonsense, but I will do what is necessary to help you. Mr. Radescu said he would contact someone in South Carolina who would deliver the wolfsbane to us within the hour."

That was the last thing I remembered before I passed out. Two days later, I awoke in a hospital bed. A nurse's aide was sitting by my bed, and when she saw me open my eyes, she jumped up and ran out of the room. A few minutes later, a nurse came in, checked my temperature, and took my blood pressure. Then she reached to the side of my neck and pulled off a foul smelling compress.

She smiled at me. "I'm glad to see you're still with us. Your temperature is normal and the swelling is greatly reduced."

I tried to speak, but couldn't because my throat was so dry. "Here's some water," she said, putting a container with a straw to my mouth.

I greedily imbibed the cool liquid. "What happened to me?"

"Two days ago, you passed out in the emergency room. Your fever rose to 105°. A package of leaves arrived, and they were put into the poultice that I just took off your neck."

"Thank you," I said. As I lay in bed, I realized I owed my life to a 300 year-old vampire 4000 miles away in Romania. I knew that one day I would have to repay this debt.

Today's Review is that whole mortal/vampire love affair but in today's book it contains the twist of the female being the Vampire and the mortal being the male.

Review : Unholy Embrace - Neil Benson -2010

A popular storyline lately has been the tale of the mortal/vampire love story and the majority of them have ended up writing the male as a Vampire and the female as the lovestruck mortal. One thing that I really liked in Neil Benson's book is that he decided to use gender reversed roles and make the male the lovestruck mortal and the female the Vampire. Having it this way, was a nice change for once.

The story starts when Frank and Nessa are out on a date and are attacked by Werewolves, the attack causes Nessa to extract her fangs and go all- vampirey , something that Frank hasn't really experienced before. From then on , we are transported back to the beginning -where they first met and how their relationship started and of course how they reached the point in the story.

What follows is Nessa explaining and opening her 400yr old heart to Frank and telling her story on how she became a Vampire starting in Hungary all the way to her travels via Vienna and Paris to the Present time in New York.

We read as the Werewolves attacks are just the beginning as Nessa has been on the run nearly 400 years and has been tracked by Narice - the vampire lover of the Vampire who turned Nessa and in return Nessa Killed out of vengeance.

When Frank realises the consequences and danger of being with Nessa , can he stand strong and embrace the unholiness of being with a Vampire or will he take the white feather coward option out and leave Nessa to follow a path of a normal life ?

An excellent story that shows readers in a paranormal and supernatural way that no matter what happens and how terrifying obstacles can be - love between not only mortals but mortals and supernaturals can stick tog

Unholy Embrace by Neil Benson is the story of a romantic and dangerous love affair between a beautiful, ages-old vampire and a mortal man. This story is enchanting and sexy with an edge of excitement. Not only do we read about vampires but of werewolves and demons. The New York night life and seedy underbelly do well to create a dangerous atmosphere. I enjoyed reading about the main character’s blossoming relationship but also the horrific demons and monsters that lurk about in the night. Nessa Harcanu is the sexy vampire born in 1597 in a small town near Budapest.

Though Nessa is voluptuous and sultry, she posses a power beyond mortal imagination. She becomes involved with a mortal man named Frank Thornton who is an attractive architect that is skeptical about the existence of vampires and demons. Also joining the story are members of the Meyer family of which Nessa becomes close with early on in her life as a vampire; they come to serve her and assist her with her needs throughout the ages. We also come across a weaker vampire named Narice whom, after her master is killed by Nessa, begins following Nessa waiting to exact her revenge. There are a few other characters we run across in the story who serve as a backdrop in the evolvement of the two main characters. The interaction with these other characters gives us insight to the character’s lives and personalities.

Nessa’s tale of how she became a vampire and her life up until present day is one of intrigue and even sadness. Frank listens to Nessa’s story and becomes even more enchanted with her and begins to understand her a little better. Their relationship is really one of master and subservient, Nessa the master and Frank the subservient. Even with the uneven balance of power the relationship between the two becomes stronger and the need to protect one another grows. The appearance of a demon creates more drama and trouble for the two and they realize in order to save humanity they must defeat this demon in any way possible.

I would classify this story as less horror and more romantic suspense but it is still a wonderful and exciting tale. As I delved deeper into the book I found it hard to put down. It is definitely an easy read and isn’t cluttered with unnecessary plot and lag time. There were times of some light eroticism mixed in with story to give it an edge above the teeny-bopper vampire love stories. Also we examine great power within Nessa making her almost super-heroine like in her conquests. Frank’s mind is torn between his deep love of Nessa and his wish for normalcy in his life. My only complaint as far as this novel was concerned was that I felt that the ending was a tad rushed; I felt that maybe the writer was a little unsure of how to resolve the conflict without creating more trouble for the characters.

Neil Benson has a rare talent for creating a story where you can identify and truly care about what happens to the characters. Giving life to character’s like Nessa and Frank enables the reader to walk in the footsteps of the characters, getting more in-depth in the story and almost being able to see the world through their eyes. I would also have to give Neil Benson props on creating a dueling perspective between the characters; by doing this we can see the story from the perspective of both Nessa and Frank. I would highly recommend this book to all vampire lovers out there and especially those who enjoy romantic flights of fancy.

Vampires and Jesus or Rabbit: Chasing Beth Rider

In Rabbit:Chasing Beth Rider, Ellen Maze has written a truly unique and creative novel. When I first read about this book, I was intrigued by the notion of true Christianity meeting vampires. I wasn't disappointed by the novel. Ellen gives a fresh perspective the relationship between vampires and mortals. I admit to being confused by whether Beth was a rabbit for a few pages. Once I understood the metaphor, I enjoyed it. From my perspective, the entire novel was a metaphor. This wasn't just about good and evil, or Christianity and the devil, so to speak. It was about the nature of the way people relate to each other. Vampires are bullies, "people" who use other people. The world is filled with such people even if they aren't officially vampires. Instead of Van Helsing or Blade coming after the vampires, a small woman armed with her only her faith confronts the whole evil race and... To say more would be to give away the entire novel. I was intrigued, interested, and thoroughly enjoyed Ellen's unique perspective and her writing style. I strongly recommend this novel to anybody who is interested in a new view in vampire novels.

Frank, deceived by the demon, opens the door and all hell breaks loose.

“Frank, I told you not to unlock the door,” Nessa said.

When the demon turned to face her, she reached inside her pocket and withdrew gold powder she threw at it. The demon put its hands in front of its face and shook its head. Nessa threw more powder at the creature and chanted in Latin. The Huli Jing was unable to move, and smoke came off its body and arms. She threw more powder on the demon while she continued chanting. The demon, covered in the fine gold powder, hunched its shoulders while contracting into a tighter mass. As it did so, the smoke continued to increase.

Nessa pulled a silver dagger out of her coat and stabbed the demon in the chest. It emitted a loud, “Hhhhcccchhh,” sound. Greenish fluid flowed down its chest, but the hole made by the knife closed up.

She stabbed at it again. This time the demon grabbed the end of the dagger, broke it off, and tossed it away. Nessa clenched her fist.

The Huli Jing shook its body. Some of the fine gold powder flew into the air, and smoke coming off it decreased. The demon became brighter and brighter, until it was almost impossible to look at. The creature hissed at Nessa, and she bared her fangs and snarled.

Her knees buckled, and she pulled her cape over her head. The light created by the demon intensified, and Nessa fell backward into what remained of the doorway. The demon struggled to move towards her, hindered by the remaining golden dust on it.

As I sat on a stool in my neighborhood pub drinking a pint of my favorite brew, a black-haired, swarthy man of middle height approached me. I looked at him while he stared at me. I turned away, hoping he would disappear into the men's room. Unfortunately, I could feel his eyes boring into my back, and I knew he wouldn't go away.

I turned to him and asked, "Is there something you want?"

He continued staring at me without showing any indication he had heard what I had said.

"Okay, stare away," I said, and glared at him. After a while, the intensity of his gaze became disconcerting.

"You are the person that wrote the article stating that psychic vampirism is nonsense?" he asked in a strange foreign accent.

"I wrote a post on my blog to that effect," I replied.

"Same thing," he said. "You think psychic vampirism is a joke?"

"I don't know if it's a joke, but it's certainly not real." His intense gaze continued to bother me.

"Perhaps you need to learn a lesson in humility," he said tersely.

"Life has humbled me many times but I don't see you as tonight's teacher."

"Perhaps a demonstration is in order," he said as he opened his eyes wider.

Suddenly, I began to feel dizzy and leaned forward. I wasn't sure what was happening, but I'm knew I needed to steady myself. So, I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and visualized a peaceful blue sky. I slowed my breathing until I felt relaxed and noted that the dizziness had disappeared. Time to face this character down.

I raised my head and he maneuvered his so that his eyes were in contact with mine. I continued my slow rhythmic breathing and returned his stare. This time it had no effect on me.

He squinted and his forehead furrowed as if he were trying to intensify his stare. Beads of perspiration broke out on his forehead and above his upper lip.

Feeling more confident, I smiled at him.

"Grrrhh," he said as he leaned forward, bringing his face closer to mine.

"Enough is enough I said," as I put the palm of my hand against his chest and shoved him backward.

He had difficulty maintaining his balance and bumped into a large, muscular blonde-haired man. The Nordic-looking fellow pushed him away. The swarthy stranger opened his mouth without saying anything. He righted himself, but when he looked at me all of his confidence was gone, and his eyes were confused.

By this time he had attracted the attention of Mike the bartender. "Hey, buddy. We don't need any trouble around here. If you wanna drink, fine. If not, get out," Mike said.

The swarthy man shook his head, turned, and walked out the door.

"Neil, who the hell was that guy?" asked Mike.

"A wannabe psychic vampire," I said, and laughed.

"A what?" Mike raised his eyebrows.

"Never mind," I said, and picked up my mug to finish my beer.

As Mike walked away, I called out to him. "Another beer please."

After leaving her apartment, I was outside walking toward Central Park within five minutes. If I took too long to decide, our relationship would end. Nessa had been lonely for over four hundred years. She made a choice about me, perhaps impulsively, but now I knew how much I meant to her. She would be devastated if I rejected her, and I had no wish to be the cause of such pain. But I also needed to consider the risks involved.

I walked along the outside of the park until I found myself in front of the Museum of Natural History. For all the information it contained, it didn't have displays about creatures the visitors were better off not knowing. Nessa, werewolves, and demons didn't exist in any of the museum's catalogs. However, she was also a woman, one that aroused the strongest feelings I had ever experienced. Should I make a commitment based mostly on feelings? I was always so rational. To go with her was to step into the unknown and far beyond my comfort zone.

When I looked at my watch, I saw five hours remained until dawn. For once in my life I decided to go where my heart led. I walked south until I hailed a cab, and in a few minutes I was back at her apartment. The strong need I felt to be with her contrasted with how I felt two hours ago. Time is not measured in minutes or hours but by the manner in which we experience our lives. When I stood in front of her door, I knew my decision.

In a few minutes, a train wheeled into the station, and everybody but us got on it. When the train pulled away, she checked to see if we were alone. Using her fingertips, she lifted the metal plate a couple of inches off the floor. Then she grabbed hold of it with both hands and set it two feet away from the hole.

I looked into the hole and saw the concrete platform twenty feet below us. “How do we get down there?”

“First I jump, then you jump, and I catch you.”

“What?” My heartburn got worse. I doubted there was any antacid in the backpack

“What did I say that you didn't understand?” She frowned.

“I understood what you said. It's the plan I’m wondering about.”

“There's a rope in the backpack, but nothing to tie it to. Besides, could you climb down the rope?”

“Point taken. I feel awkward about jumping and having you catch me.”

“Get over your male vanity. Please do what I ask you.” She rolled her eyes. “Put on your backpack and jump.” She turned and jumped through the hole, landing on her feet so as if she was a trained acrobat. She looked up and motioned for me.

I took a deep breath and jumped into her waiting arms. Nessa caught me and put me on my feet. I followed her when she walked toward the south end of the deserted platform. She walked on the balls of her feet, like a hunter tracking down her prey

Nessa is dragged by her master into a nunnery, which he quickly turns into an abattoir.

One evening he dragged me out of the cave, leading me for several miles before we came to a nunnery. I didn't realize what he intended until he took me to the front door, rang the bell, and then quickly moved to the side. The prioress peered out a small opening in the gate. When she saw me standing alone, she opened the door. The vampire moved inside so swiftly she barely had time to scream. He bit her neck, and she was dead before she hit the floor. He went inside the nunnery, and. I soon heard the screams of many women.

I watched the prioress bleed to death, horrified at what he had done, but there was more horror to see when I entered. When I followed the sounds of screaming into the chapel, I found a nun seated on the floor with her back against a wall. Her left hand was trying to cover the wounds in her neck, while her right hand touched a ten-inch silver cross on the floor. She gestured for me to approach.

When I came closer, she said, “Take this,” and handed me the silver cross. At first, it burned my hand, but after a few minutes I could feel energy pulsing throughout my body. I realized she had given me an opportunity to claim back part of my humanity. As I held up the cross, it no longer burned my hand. When I looked down, her head rested on her shoulder, telling me her agony had ended.
